An alleged victim looked “distraught” while sitting next to Alan Jones, who had his hand under the table, a fellow guest at a lower north shore luncheon has told a Sydney court.
The alleged victim, known as complainant C, earlier told the court that Jones had instructed him to sit next to him at the long table and spent the entire lunch with his left hand under the table and either on his leg or on his penis over his pants.
Jones has pleaded not guilty to 20 charges of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching against six complainants.
On Friday the fellow guest told the court he could not see what was happening under the table but from his seat he did observe Jones spinning his wine in a glass in his right hand while his left hand was under the table.
“He looked distraught,” the guest said of C in Downing Centre local court.
His attention had been drawn to the alleged victim because two other guests closer to Jones and C appeared to be “startled” and “amused”, he said.
“As I was sitting this way out of the corner of my eye … people were laughing … Alan was spinning his wine and his left hand was under the table,” the first witness for C told the court. “They were startled, amused in a way.”
The lunch guest said when they left the restaurant, the two men were on the verge outside “ribbing” C about what allegedly happened.
“[They] were ribbing [C] about Alan’s hand and [one of them] said ‘you were copping a feel’.
“[C] was shaking his head saying ‘unbelievable,’” the witness told the court.
“His head was down. He didn’t look up. I distinctly remember thinking ‘something bad has happened here’.”
The witness said as they walked back to the car after lunch Jones was patting C on the back and squeezing him on the back of the neck.
“He looked very, very, very upset” and “absolutely devastated”, the witness said.
“He kind of reared away from the touch.”
The alleged victim earlier told the court he felt “deeply, deeply embarrassed”
when he realised a fellow guest was looking at him “while Alan was touching my penis”.
Prosecutor Georgina Wright asked if the fellow guest had a look on his face.
C replied: “Yes, it was a smirk.
“I didn’t want them thinking I was Alan’s toy. I know that sounds like a simplistic way of putting it, but they all made jokes about Alan being interested in young men.”
The trial before judge Glenn Walsh continues.
