Classics students at King’s College London in the 1970s recall Averil Cameron not just for her intellect and knowledge, but also for her kindness and patience. When she was leaving an all-night student party at a reasonable hour, her fur hat went missing, and a search ensued. Eventually she said, with a commendable lack of asperity, “I think Tom is standing on it”.
