England’s bid for a fourth successive Commonwealth Games men’s artistic gymnastics team title was both unsuccessful and overshadowed by a sickening injury to the teenager Gabriel Langton, who was taken from the arena by stretcher after a heavy fall from the high bar while the competition was still ongoing.

The 19-year-old fell vertically, head and neck first on to the mat during the final rotation of the team final, bringing competition to an immediate halt as medical staff rushed to his aid. The arena fell silent while Langton received treatment, with fellow gymnasts watching on in visible concern.

After initially lying motionless, Langton responded to medical staff, moving his legs and later his hands. A dozen medical personnel carefully stabilised the England gymnast before lifting him on to a stretcher about 11 minutes after the fall. He was applauded by the crowd as he was taken from the competition floor.

After action resumed, Canada took the gold with 241.400, with England in second with 238.250 and Australia in the bronze spot with 235.650.
