San Diego Sockers defender Stefan Mijatovic has been banned for life from the Major Arena Soccer League for his “severe and violent conduct” after an altercation during the first game of the league’s championship series on Wednesday night.

The confrontation started at the final whistle of the Sockers’ 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Wave in Game 1 of the Ron Newman Cup, the trophy awarded to the champions of the MASL, the top flight of indoor soccer in the United States. Players from both sides clashed with each other, not an uncommon sight in the world of indoor soccer, which sometimes feels closer to hockey than the outdoor game.

That dust-up eventually spilled into the walkway towards the locker rooms. In video of the incident, Mijatovic can be seen taunting fans, who in turn begin pelting him and several other Sockers players with debris. Mijatovic is seen throwing a water bottle at those fans, while his teammates engage in a shoving match with them. The entire Sockers squad eventually disappears down the tunnel.

Mijatovic, now 29, is an MASL journeyman, having spent time with nine different teams over the course of his eight-year career. He has a lengthy disciplinary history in the MASL. While playing for the Tacoma Stars in January 2025, Mijatovic was at the center of an all-out brawl after a match against the Wave, one that ended with multiple players exchanging blows within inches of several fans. Mijatovic was already on probation when, 11 months later, he stomped on an injured player after a foul.

After that incident, the league placed Mijatovic on a zero-tolerance policy, which he violated against the Wave on Wednesday night.

Five other players received fines or suspensions from the MASL for the incident, while the Wave and Sockers organizations were also fined for “failure to maintain proper bench and postgame decorum, actions deemed conduct detrimental to the league”. The league also said in its statement that it is engaging with both clubs and local law enforcement to identify the fans involved in the incident. Those fans, the league says, would face indefinite bans from MASL events and may be subject to legal consequences.

Mijatovic has become something of a cult figure in the world of indoor soccer and has a well-earned reputation as one of the MASL’s most intimidating players. That reputation has occasionally bled over into other areas of the sport. The German-born defender has featured in Kings League, the seven-a-side indoor tournament started by Spanish legend Gerard Piqué, and in TST, an annual, seven-a-side competition in the United States. Mijatovic was briefly banned from that competition three years ago after a violent, on-field confrontation with social media influencer Noah Beck.

He also represented the United States in the World Cup of minifootball, a version of the outdoor game most commonly played with five players a side. Mijatovic had a brief career in the outdoor game, having played for National Independent Soccer Association side Chicago House AC in 2021.

His résumé in indoor soccer is longer, particularly in the MASL. After his debut with the Chicago Mustangs in 2016, Mijatovic spent time with the Orlando SeaWolves, Florida Tropics, St Louis Ambush, Utica City FC, the Empire Strykers, Tacoma Stars, Kansas City Comets and most recently the Sockers, the most successful professional soccer franchise in American history.

Barring any potential reversal of his lifetime ban, his journey in the MASL has come to an unceremonious end. The Sockers and Wave will meet on Friday night in game two of the best-of-three championship series.
