President Donald Trump and the first lady were whisked out of the annual White House correspondents’ dinner on Saturday after shots were fired at the event.
Journalists and other attendees sought cover under tables as security forces rushed to evacuate the president and other senior cabinet members. Soon after, authorities said the shooter had been detained after the incident, but asked attendees to leave. White House Correspondents Association Chair Weijia Jiang later returned to the stage to announce the dinner would be rescheduled.
In a press briefing from the White House later Saturday evening, Trump describing the shooter as a “lone wolf” and the hotel where the event was being held as “not a particularly secure building”.
