After an agonising 10 months’ wait, the wedding of the century is apparently here: if the reports are true, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will be tying the knot this weekend, uniting the houses of sports and entertainment in holy matrimony. When the couple announced their engagement on Instagram in August, as part of a carefully coordinated album rollout/podcast promotion tie-in, it shattered platform records, drawing 14m likes in its first hour. (It’s now up to 37.4m.)

Yet it’s remarkable, given the couple’s profile and the investigative horsepower apparently dedicated to cracking this wedding wide open, just how little we know for sure in this, the (purported) week of the event. We’ve sifted through all the speculation, sources “close to the couple” and scarcely concealed grumbling from spurned guests to answer the burning questions.

Is it really being held at a stadium?

When Madison Square Garden was first suggested as Swift’s wedding venue, the response was near-unanimous scoffing: a windowless sports stadium? Fans hoped it was a decoy (or a wedding livestream watch party … dream on!). However, the New York Times has reported that “You Know Who” had rented the basketball and hockey arena for a multiple-day celebration, while a permit had also been filed with the city to close the surrounding streets until Saturday afternoon.

According to the NYT report, there will be an “intimate gathering” of 100 people on Thursday with a bigger celebration on Friday – with reports that a castle is being assembled inside based on photos taken outside the venue of a giant white staircase. With the venue’s capacity about 22,000, even 1,000 guests might feel intimate; the upside to MSG’s lack of natural light sources is that it’s paparazzi-proof, plus it has a track record of providing security for high-profile guests. There’s also a wedding precedent: Sly Stone and model Kathy Silva got married on MSG’s stage in 1974 before a sold-out crowd.

Could it be a Nicks/McGraw/Sheeran triple bill?

Page Six has claimed that Stevie Nicks and Tim McGraw will be performing at the wedding. Swift and Nicks have long had a publicly admiring relationship, and last collaborated on liner notes for Swift’s 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department.

McGraw, meanwhile, was the inspiration for Swift’s first-ever hit, written when she was 16.

Paul McCartney’s name is also in the mix, along with Swift’s longtime pal Ed Sheeran. She previously told a British radio station that “he’s like, ‘I’m always being asked to sing at weddings.’ It’s like Ed, if there’s a stage, you know that you’ll be on it. He wants to give people what they want …”

Who else is invited?

Though Swift joked to Graham Norton that “anyone I’ve ever talked to” would be invited, there are some names that will probably be on the guest list. Her high-school friend Abigail Anderson is favourite to be a bridesmaid. (According to CBS, $4.5m has so far been wagered on every aspect of the occasion, from the venue to the maid of honour.) Other favourites include model Gigi Hadid, stylist Ashley Avignone, Swift’s future sister-in-law Kylie Kelce, pop stars Selena Gomez and the Haim sisters. Other surefire certs include model/musicians Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse, and actor Emma Stone.

Country stars Kenny Chesney, Little Big Town, Sugarland and the Chicks have also been rumoured. And a Saturday Night Live table could also be likely, with both Swift and Kelce having hosted the show, while Page Six reports that Oscar winner Adrien Brody will also be there.

Kelce’s side, meanwhile, is likely to be flooded with all of his NFL teammates, coaching staff and partners.

More importantly: who isn’t invited?

The biggest question is whether Swift’s former BFF Blake Lively made the cut. For years Swift was close to Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds (Lively even named her as godmother to their four children). But the relationship seemingly cooled.

Other uncertain invites are Zoë Kravitz, Swift’s friend of a decade who is now dating her ex Harry Styles (who is performing at London’s Wembley stadium this week) and model/coder Karlie Kloss, a core “squad” member to whom Swift was once joined at the hip before the relationship cooled to such an extent Swift didn’t attend Kloss’s wedding (Kloss’s rep says Swift was unable to attend due to prior commitments).

How are they keeping it quiet?

Such is the secrecy that even guests have been left in the dark, reportedly receiving no other direction than to be “in New York City” on 3 July. It’s likely non-disclosure agreements will have been signed. Invitations were also reportedly individually watermarked.

Kelce’s San Francisco 49ers teammate George Kittle seems to have already spilled one detail, claiming that the invite specified “absolutely no gifts” – though he intended to bend the rule, buying Kelce an “old coin” for his collection.

And the bride will wear?

With Swift no stranger to a quick outfit change, multiple looks are expected. Among the names in the mix are Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Givenchy by Sarah Burton and Ralph Lauren (who was behind the engagement look). The favourite, however, might be a custom design from Monse, the line of Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, the former co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, who designed several looks for the Eras tour. More recently Swift wore a black strapless Monse gown to perform Love Story at a fundraiser Kelce threw in Nashville – taken as a clue that they are in favour.

Wait … has Swift been dropping hints this whole time?

Quite possibly. Back when MSG was still a scurrilous rumour, Swift was photographed courtside at a New York Knicks game with the Haim sisters wearing T-shirts reading “Stevie Knicks”. What was then seen as a laboured attempt at bandwagoning between friends is now being read as a clue to her bridesmaids, wedding performer and venue.

Meanwhile, on Monday, CBS filmed crews at MSG unloading large trucks of equipment labelled “Garden Party 1”, perhaps a reference to Swift’s engagement photoshoot. The reported castle, too, could be a nod to the Love Story video, and her wedding reverie as a 17-year-old. We know Swift loves to leave a trail of clues behind her. The real question is how much she will ever choose to share.

After a highly public courtship and record-breaking engagement, Swift and Kelce might yet surprise us all with a low-key, intimate occasion – albeit on one of the world’s most famous stages, with a purpose-built castle.
