Ireland, just like Wales, were up in the match and then on penalties, too. Caoimhin Kelleher saved against Mojmir Chytil to give Ireland a 3-2 lead after six kicks. But misses from Azaz and Browne followed. Despite Troy Parrott’s heroics last year – and two penalties tonight – Ireland will miss yet another World Cup, 24 years on from their last appearance.

Once again for Wales, it’s defeat on penalties in a playoff. Neco Williams and Brennan Johnson could not find the net. They were so close, leading until the 86th minute through Dan James’ staggering hit. But Edin Dzeko, 40, stepped up once again for his country with a heartbreaking header.

Wales went through a tricky period of transition. Any team in the world would suffer from the loss of Bale, but Ramsey and Allen have been big losses, too. Bellamy has been tremendous, much better than I expected, and he’s galvanised them into a real ‘team’ again. The 7-1 against North Macedonia in the last game was magnificent, but sadly overshadowed by Scotland turning into prime Brazil on the same night. I honestly don’t think they’ll end up qualifying for the World Cup, which is disappointing, but I think the next few years could be fun.
