Daisy Doris May: the 10 funniest things I have ever seen (on the internet)
The drag king and comedian shares her retro laughs, including Miranda Sings, a hip-hop enthusiast and a trip to the dentist
silverguide.site –
If you know me, you’ll know I am a dinosaur. I’m always the last to find out about major news, watch or read whatever the rest of the crew are into … or even know what’s going on in the world.
It’s both my secret skill and my flaw.
My first experience with a computer was our family PC, which took about 15 minutes to turn on. It lived on the landing and was shared with my three siblings. I can still hear the old-school dial-up. My mum (the legendary Rozza) would put a sheet over the giant computer when MSN was off limits.
These days I wish I could do the same thing with my phone – just throw a blanket over it and forget it exists. It terrifies me how lost I feel without it so I try to keep the “‘scroll of doom” to a minimum. But I think, especially after lockdown, we all see how it can bring us together. Living on my own, my phone saved me … especially since I fell in love with someone in South Africa.
Anyway, like many of you, sharing ridiculous videos is a full-on love language for me.
FYI: I’m from the generation who thought it was totally normal to write a whole private message on someone’s public Facebook wall using ONLY CAPITAL LETTERS and a million exclamation marks.
So you’ve been warned about my ENTHUSIASTIC love for the old CAPS.
1. This DIVA
As I watched this girl paint her face, I realised she is clearly my spirit animal. I will for ever be obsessed with how she is feeeeeeling every flick and dot. As a drag artist my makeup skills should really be a lot better than they are.
2. Rowan Atkinson
Utter PERFECTION. It changed what standup is in my little brain for evermore … Genius. Genius. Genius.
3. David after the dentist
What a hero. David’s trip to the dentist is both an advert for drugs and also a reminder – “Hey kids, don’t do drugs!” Can anyone else relate to his breakdown moment?
4. Miranda Sings
Right. Who else was OBSESSED with Miranda Sings?? Discovering this at my drama school blew my mind of how characters could break the internet. My favourite thing to do was to read the comments and see how many people thought she was real. Just as people thought my alter ego Karen was real on a Jet2 plane when I did a handstand in the middle of the aisle, it’s a big old compliment when folks think this character is really out there.
5. They’ve just been really rude to Sandra
I must have watched this sketch 100 times. Me and my friend used to quote, “No. NOOO. No. We’re leaving. They’ve just been really rude to Sandra.” In any situation we could. As I’m writing this I’m realising that the more niche the reference, the better.
6. Creature Comforts
Prepare yourselves for the most timeless animation from Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman: Creature Comforts! I could watch these all day. Who else wants to sign my petition for more to be made?!
7. Christopher Hall
When I see a video pop up by Christopher Hall … I’m sucked in and I’m missing my stop on the tube. I scrolled back to find this bad boy: a very accurate impersonation of a skeleton in a closet.
8. This is hip-hop
This woman lives in my brain forever – rent-free. The way she speaks about hip-hop is as if she invented it. I’m obsessed with everything about it and I need to create a character just like her. Welcome friends, to what hip-hop REALLY looks like.
9. I’m a bear
So … it would be fair to say me and my husband and I are getting brooooody. But my sister-in-law sent me this saying this is going to be us as parents. She’s not wrong is she? Help …
10. Big Bad Wolf
Get ready for the best wormhole you are ever about to go on. This series is my absolute favourite. Cosplay. Improv. Absurdity. I’ve genuinely watched this clip about 30 times.
Daisy Doris May will perform her show Big Night Out at Edinburgh fringe from 31 July to 24 August
