Our family’s Saturday: ‘I’m getting the kids used to some spice’

On Saturdays, the boys all wake up before us, and we’re up early because they have swimming lessons at 9.30am. We’re on the waiting list for another class in the week, but for now we all get up and jump in the car together. It’s really important to us that they know how to swim, because it’s a great skill and at first, one of the boys was a little scared of the water. Now, they love it. While the twins are in the pool, the little one is in the soft play area. I’d like to say the exercise tires them out a bit, but it’s pretty hard to get them tired.
Once we’re home, everyone will have a break and do their own thing. On Sundays we tend to go out somewhere, so Saturdays are often spent at home. Some days we’ll even just hang around in our pyjamas. We try to let the boys have some time to get bored – we think it’s important for their imagination and for them to be able to play without us constantly having to be involved. We’re not supposed to be their entertainers. We’ll try to get some jobs in, or just try to rest ourselves. But the boys wind each other up a lot, so often we’re just dealing with that. Eventually we’ll all have some lunch together, but it’ll just be something simple like sandwiches.
It’s really important to us that we spend time together as a family on the weekend – we try to do everything together. We want the kids to enjoy spending time with us and stay close – emotionally and physically – when they’re older. It’s also about making memories to look back on when they do grow up and leave home. As a parent, those memories are what you’re left with.
The boys are really into their football at the moment. The twins have training in the week and matches on Sunday mornings. On Saturdays, I’ll take them out in the garden to have a kick around. They want a bit of coaching and it’s nice that there are certain little things you can show them. The four-year-old loves it and he’s actually really good for his age. It’s just nice to share a hobby with them. They’re still making up their minds who they support – they say they support Liverpool, like me, but they might end up supporting a Scottish team, who knows?
Sometimes I’ll try to cook something spicy for dinner – I was born in London but my family are from Ghana. Mason is into the spice a bit more than Henry. Often, I’ll have a situation where they’ll have some salt and pepper on something and think it’s spicy and I think: “This can’t be my kid,” so I’m trying to get them used to some spice. Ivana also likes looking up different recipes on YouTube. Sometimes though, the kids just want pasta and that’s fine too.
In the evening we like to all play charades. Having kids at different ages, it can be tough to find a game for everyone. Baby Yaw – we still call him that – doesn’t understand the rules if we play something like Monopoly – he just wants to make his own up and doesn’t really get the concept of a game. But he can join in with charades. Except most times, he’ll just act out the same thing – Ronaldo. But it’s really lovely, because the twins adjust it so he can play along. Ivana will sometimes play the piano and the boys will have a sing-a-long, or we’ll just have a dance together. We like having musical evenings at home.
Sometimes we’ll put Baby Yaw down to bed and then sit down and have another proper game with the twins so they get that time with us. Yaw is perfect at bedtime, but with the twins, it’s trickier. They share a room and they love to talk. We try to have some time to ourselves when the kids are in bed, but it’s hard to switch off when you can hear them winding each other up.
We used to feel like we never just wanted to be in every night watching TV, but now it’s often the best way to just chill and cuddle, and watch some TV. It’s nice to have some time, just the two of you. We might have a chat, but sometimes I don’t have any energy left for it – and that’s OK too.
