Twenty-seven people have been taken to hospital with four people “still very, very ill” after a car ploughed into the crowd at Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade through the city on Monday evening.

Just after 6pm on Water Street, about a mile from the end of the parade and after the team had recently passed, a vehicle collided with members of the crowd, according to witnesses. Merseyside police said a 53-year-old white male from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene.

We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.
