Josh Johnson on Trump’s allies: ‘He doesn’t care about competence; he wants loyalty’

On The Daily Show last night, Josh Johnson focused on an uptick in ranch dressing sales, the results of New York’s primaries and the different ways that Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump are “kingmakers”.

In his Daily Show monologue, Josh Johnson discussed reports that the World Cup has led to a “sauce craze”, with TSA confiscating many bottles of ranch dressing from fans flying back to their home countries.
“Come on, TSA, do you really need to be so strict about this?” Johnson asked. “No one’s going to blow up a plane with a bottle of ranch. The bathroom, maybe, but not the plane.”
Johnson then turned to New York’s primary elections which saw democratic socialists win two House positions and several state seats this week.
“While every election has its winners and losers, there was one guy who came out on top last night, who wasn’t even on the ballot,” said Johnson in reference to Zohran Mamdani. All three candidates backed by the mayor won their races, leading one commentator to call him a “kingmaker”.
“A socialist making kings? That’s crazy!” laughed Johnson. “That’s like if a capitalist made a hospital everybody could afford.
“Obviously, Republicans are mad about Mamdani’s wins, but it also pissed off the Democratic establishment,” the host continued. “Which is pretty insane, because they’re in your party.”
On Truth Social, Donald Trump sarcastically congratulated Mamdani for “pulling through three solid communists”, and bemoaned the fact that there had been “zero media attention” for primary wins of those he has endorsed.
“Trump sounds like someone at a birthday party trying to remind people it’s also his birthday,” joked Johnson. “He’s just walking up like, ‘Happy birthday Margaret, looks like we’re both Geminis, huh? And technically, I’ve been having this birthday longer so you kind of stole it from me.’”
Trump has thrown his weight behind the Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton, who has been involved in several political scandals over the past decade, with accusations of bribery, fraud and abuse of office. Last year, his wife filed for divorce on “biblical grounds” after reports that Paxton had been unfaithful.
“Biblical grounds? I’ve never heard that before,” said Johnson. “Imagine showing up to your divorce with a Bible, going, ‘He committed all the sins.’”
Paxton has gushed about his “love” for Trump, saying “every time I’m around him, it’s infectious.”
“That’s a weird way to describe your relationship,” said Johnson. “Did you cheat on your wife with Trump?
“Trump doesn’t care about competence; he just wants loyalty,” he added. “That’s why he endorsed Ken Paxton over John Cornyn [in Texas] and that’s why he endorsed Ed Gallrein over Thomas Massie [in Kentucky], even though Massie was more Maga.
“But Thomas Massie told Trump that he’s not going to blow him to get elected, while Ken Paxton told Trump, ‘Let me suck this peanut butter through a straw, and see what I can do for you.’”
Johnson argued that the differing approaches that Mamdani and Trump take to endorsements speaks to a fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans today. “They both have kingmakers, but kingmakers are looking for two different things in each party.”
While Mamdani says he is drawn to a desire to “fight” and “reject a politics of big money and small ideas” in allies, Trump says that he has less complicated criteria. “When people like me, I like them,” he told reporters on Monday. “It’s a very simple formula.”
“That’s not really a formula,” Johnson noted. “Whatever you think about Trump and Mamdani, it’s very clear that they are controlling the vibe of their party. And voters are eager to see, come November, which base is going to sound like [audio of woman screaming]”.
